Trigger Point Massage

The Trigger Point Massage is used to release trigger points or small, tight knots in muscles that develop and cause pain. This type of treatment is focused on these small areas to release the knot or pain point and to treat the pain they cause. Too many of these painful trigger points become a condition known as myofascial pain syndrome.

Trigger points are not really knots, but they feel that way. These painful spots are small patches of tightly contracted muscles or micro cramps that can choke off their own blood supply. These trigger points can cause migraine headaches, neck pain, low back pain, and more. Where there are muscles, there are trigger points that can result in nasty leg cramps, shoulder and arm pain, or leg, ankle, and foot pain.

Trigger points can be caused by chronic muscle overload, irritation of other trigger points, psychological distress, disease, homeostatic imbalances, trauma to the area, infection, and health issues like smoking. These trigger points only form in muscles, but the contraction can pull on tendons, ligaments, and nerves causing pain.  Research has found that these trigger points contain harmful amounts of toxic acetylcholine, noradrenaline, and serotonin along with a low pH. The trigger points also compress nearby blood supplies causing both pain and weakness.

Trigger Point Massage Techniques

A Trigger Point Massage uses more than one technique to get results and can involve acupressure, myofascial release therapy, therapeutic massage, and others. The pain point will be released by direct pressure or one of the other methods. Each pain point is pressed, massaged, and stretched as the need arises. Because this is a therapeutic and not a luxury-oriented massage, it may not be relaxing.

But it will leave a person feeling much better, loose and refreshed! The main goal is to treat pain and tight muscles. At the end of the therapy session, the therapist will recommend drinking water and doing additional exercises and stretches once at home to prevent the trigger points from coming back.
