Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage on man's back
The Deep Tissue Massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on the deep tissues of the body. Most massage treatments focus on the top layers of muscle and soft tissue. Unfortunately, a lot of pain and tension is held deep in the muscles and tendons.  Just as the name suggests, this treatment gets deep into the thick muscles that often cause people the most pain.

The focus of Deep Tissue Massage is to realign the deep layers of muscle and connective tissue that can become twisted or pinched from injuries or repetitive movement. Many of the strokes utilized in this type of remedy are similar to those of traditional massage therapies. However, those strokes tend to be slower and more pressure is applied to get deeper and concentrate on specific areas of pain and tension.

Deep tissue massages may cause some pain and discomfort during the therapy. So it is important that you inform your therapist during the treatment so they can adjust their strokes to maintain comfort. It is also common for stiffness and pain to occur after the deep tissue massage. However, this discomfort will only last a day or so.

Deep Tissue Massage Techniques

The Deep Tissue Massage will begin with some light strokes and soft tissue manipulation. This is done to warm up the muscles and to allow easier access to the deeper layers and connective tissue. Once the muscles are warmed up and more relaxed, the healing process can begin. These are the common techniques used with this massage remedy:
  • Cross-Fiber Friction- This stroke is to be used without lubrication to allow friction to occur across the muscle fibers. The pressure is applied, and strokes go in one direction across the particular muscle to help align the damaged tissue.
  • Active Release Technique- This stroke involves precise pressure to the area of treatment. Manipulation and movement are used to break-up scar tissue and knots deep within the muscle.
  • Muscle Energy Technique- This is a type of stretching of the muscles. This technique utilizes the manipulation of specific muscles to help them gently contract and relax to help them lengthen. Some joints and muscle pain can be caused by muscles that have shortened or contracted over time.
  • Trigger Point Therapy- In this technique, the therapist will focus on trigger points in the muscles. These are often knots or injuries that are causing pain and tension. Pressure and manipulation are applied directly to these areas, often with fingers or knuckles, to force out the damage and heal scar tissue.  (Learn more about this technique in the Trigger Point Massage section.)
