Aromatherapy

Oils and towels used for Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a type of remedy that utilizes the power of essential oils added to the lubricants for the massage. The scents of the essential oils used in the treatment react directly with the limbic system of the brain. The limbic system is responsible for the various emotions that can have a big influence on the entire body.

Each essential oil provides different benefits that can aid in sending soothing messages to the limbic system. There are also oils that can be absorbed into the skin to provide other healing properties to a specific area. The type of essential oil that is used during the massage treatment is dependent upon the specific needs of the person receiving the massage.

Before the massage, your therapist will consult with you to determine any pain or problems you are having. This helps us determine the best essential oils to help your specific needs. The subtle aromas will provide a healing atmosphere to aid in the benefits of the massage. After the massage, the therapist may suggest a blend to use at home between treatments.

Aromatherapy Techniques

Aromatherapy can be utilized with almost any type of massage. However, this holistic approach will be concentrated on the more relaxing strokes. These are the most common strokes used for Aromatherapy:
  • Effleurage- This is the main stroke used to warm up the muscles and prepare the body for deeper tissue stimulation. Steady pressure is applied using the palm of the hands, thumbs, and forefingers, to apply gliding strokes across the area.
  • Fanning- This is a type of effleurage motion used to push tension away from the muscles. The therapeutist will use a three-stroke fan shape that moves outward from a single point. It is often used on the back, chest, legs, and arms.
  • Feathering- This is an extremely light stroke that can barely be felt by the person receiving the massage. The therapeutist will first glide their hands up the skin and then, using the tips of their fingers, gently glide back down the skin in a feather-like touch. This stroke is slightly firm to prevent tickling.
  • Reflexology- Reflexology is another great massage technique for aromatherapy. This technique focuses on the manipulation of the feet, hands, and even ears. There are certain points in these areas that correspond with the health of various body systems. The therapist will use their thumbs and fingers to work these areas with the essential oils to promote full-body health.  (Learn more about this technique in the Reflexology section.)
