Sports Massage

Sports massage on athlete's back
The Sports Massage is one of the most popular forms of in-home massage therapy.  It was originally developed to help athletes with work on muscle systems used in specific sports. The remedy was meant to help athletes in training and before, during, and after participating in a sporting event. The goal of the treatment is to help prevent an injury and, if an injury occurs, help it heal.  It is a great idea to incorporate a gentle sports massage into a pre-sport training schedule, as it can enhance performance and prevent painful injuries.

The Sports Massage does not need to be painful to be effective. In fact, pain may cause the patient to tense up and make the treatment counterproductive. If you’re feeling pain or discomfort at any time during the massage, speak up and let your therapist know.

One important thing to know is that massage therapists do not diagnose injuries, as that requires a visit to a sports doctor. Once a medical diagnosis is made, the therapist will work with that diagnosis to formulate a plan for recovery with massage.

Sports Massage Techniques

The Sports Massage is not a spa treatment and involves a lot of movement of extremities and physical interaction to work muscle groups. During a Sports Massage, the masseuse or masseur will either focus on one area of the athlete's body or provide a full-body massage depending on the client’s needs.  The general techniques involved in this type of therapy include:
  • Effleurage – These are light strokes done with the palm of the hands, towards the direction of the heart, to enhance blood flow.
  • Petrissage – This technique is characterized by kneading movements and helps in muscle recovery.
  • Tapotement – This technique involves hacking and cupping muscles for stimulation. It is normally used in pre-event massages.
  • Friction – Friction movements penetrate deep muscle tissues, making them ideal for healing injuries. Effleurage is usually administered prior to friction massage to warm up the muscles.
  • Vibration – The rapid movements in vibration relax and soothe the muscles.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports Massages have many benefits including improving flexibility, preventing an injury, and making the circulatory system work better. Sports Massages can calm the nervous system and promote healing after sports events. The therapeutist will gear this type of remedy to the individual and the set of muscles used in the sport they participate in.

To get the most benefit from a Sports Massage, drink plenty of fluids before and after. Eat lightly at least three hours beforehand. If the patient eats a heavy meal right before having the therapy, they may feel uncomfortable on the table. The massage does not remove moisture from a body, but a dehydrated body can lead to stiff muscles and a more painful experience.

After the treatment, the patient should drink plenty of water, take it easy, and take a bath with Epsom salt in it to further the process of getting rid of soreness and toxins in the body.  Do not go right out and exercise or work out right after getting a Sports Massage.  Wait until the next day or so.
