Swedish Massage

Swedish massage on woman's back
Out of all the various types of massage treatments available, the Swedish Massage is the most widely recognized and the most commonly used. This type of therapy utilizes five basic styles of strokes. These strokes vary from light to vigorous in their application. The Swedish Massage is designed to relax muscles and to increase blood flow returning to the heart.

Before starting, your masseuse or masseur will usually lubricate your skin with a variety of massage oils. This will help ensure a smooth application of each stroke. The therapist will work to apply their movements to help warm the muscle tissue. These strokes also help to release tension in the muscles and break up muscle adhesions or knots.

Your masseuse or masseur will also consult with you before getting started about any history of injuries you may have had. This allows us to take special care during the treatment to prevent further injury and promote the healing process.

Swedish Massage Techniques

Those receiving a Swedish Massage are generally nude under a towel or sheet. The therapeutist will uncover the body part that is to be worked on and then replace the sheet as they move to another area. This process is often performed with the patient lying face down on a table designed to cradle the head and allowing the spine to stay in a neutral position.

There are five basic techniques used with the Swedish Massage. These include:

  • Effleurage- This is performed with gliding strokes by the palms of the therapeutist’s hands. Sometimes the thumbs and forefingers are used to help apply the right pressure. This technique is used to warm up the muscles before a deeper massage can begin.
  • Petrissage- This stroke is designed to begin working the deep muscles. The therapeutist will utilize kneading or pressure motions to push into the muscles deep in the body.
  • Tapotement- This is a rhythmic tapping or percussion type of stroke used in this massage. It can be administered using the side of the hand, a cupped hand, or the fingertips. There are five types of tapotement stroke, beating, slapping, tapping, cupping, and hacking. These are used to stimulate the nervous system and release lymphatic build-up.
  • Friction- This type of stroke applies circular pressure applied with the palms of the hand. The therapist will use this stroke to push against the fibers of the muscle to create friction and help to stimulate and work loose the tension in these fibers.
  • Vibration- This technique is applied by rhythmically shaking specific areas of the body. It can be performed by placing the palms around the area of focus and applying pressure. Then, the therapist shakes and moves the area to help release built-up tension.
